Mexico is home to several dry forests which boast some of most unique creatures and vegetation of their type. Areas such as Sumidero Canyon or the Jalisco Dry Forests, along Mexico's pacific coastline, are among the most diverse, containing nearly 1200 species of plants and 250 species of mammals, of which 15% and 29% are endemic, respectively. These dry forests are unique in that they also rarely burn, suggesting that fire is not an absolute essential part for tropical dry forest development. Mexico is also home to the Chiapas Depression, where high variability in elevation and extreme slopes promote unique micro climates, of which species have adapted traits to persist through. |
